Arrest made after Union City officer hit

UNION CITY, CA

At 2:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress near the intersection of Veneto Avenue and Mission Boulevard in Union City. Union City police Cpl. Travis Souza said as the suspect attempted to drive away from arriving officers, he struck a patrol car and caused minor injuries to a police officer.

Authorities pursued the suspect, who crashed his vehicle in the area of Whipple Road and Industrial Parkway Southwest at the Union City-Hayward border. The suspect then fled on foot, Souza said.

Fremont, Hayward and Oakland police, as well as Alameda County sheriff canine units and a California Highway Patrol helicopter aided Union City police in the search for the suspect.

Souza said the suspect was eventually located and arrested in the area of 71st Avenue near the Coliseum/Oakland Airport Bay Area Rapid Transit station.

According to Souza, the investigation is ongoing and the suspect will be treated for minor injuries and then questioned.
