With Super Tuesday just a week away, you can expect your phones to heat up.
Warren Phillips likes to spend his evenings bonding with his son. The last thing he wants is a phone call soliciting his vote.
"I kind of take it as a form of harassment or an invasion of my privacy," said do not call supporter Warren Phillips.
Representative Zoe Lofgren of San Jose agrees. That's why she's written a bill to ease the pain of Warren and others who feel the same.
"What we discovered in the last election was that there were some extremely abusive practices that just drove voters over the edge," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D) San Jose.
She says some campaigns actually called voters in the middle of the night, pretending to be the opponent's campaign.
Her bill would put restrictions on those calls.
"Nobody calls after 9 p.m. and before 8 a.m. It would prohibit harassing phone calls. It would prohibit blocking the caller ID," said Lofgren.
Shaun Dakin doesn't think Lofgren's proposal goes far enough. He's come up with a grassroots idea called www.stoppoliticalcalls.org
"We're asking for politicians to take a pledge and to agree not to call people," said Shaun Dakin from www.stoppoliticalcalls.org.
You can be put on the do not call list for politicians by going to the Web site
The first phone number is free. If you want to register additional phone numbers and even e-mail addresses, it will cost you a $1.25 a year to register.
His campaign started in November, and says he remains hopeful, even tough no politicians have taken the pledge so far.
"I talked to candidates and they said "if you make it very clear that people aren't going to vote for us, we're more than likely going to take that do not call pledge," said Dakin.
Lofgren thinks the voluntary idea is fine, but believes any attempt to make political calls totally illegal would be overturned as unconstitutional.
As for Warren, he's already registered on
"I just want to relax. I want to have my down time," said Phillips.
Dakin's tells us less than 50,000 have registered on his site so far. Representative Lofgren hopes to introduce her legislation this week.
