The eastbound Interstate Highway 80 off-ramp to El Portal Drive and southbound El Portal Drive in unincorporated Contra Costa County were reopened just before 9 a.m. today after a big rig toppled over an embankment onto the roadway at about 4 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The big rig went over the embankment from eastbound Highway 80 just north of San Pablo at the El Portal Drive off-ramp and fell onto El Portal Drive shortly before 4 a.m., CHP Officer Kevin Kroncke said.

One person suffered moderate-to-major injuries and was transported to John Muir Medical Center, according to Kroncke.

The northbound and southbound lanes of El Portal Drive and El Portal Drive off-ramp were blocked while officials removed the big rig and investigated the scene, Kroncke said. The northbound lane reopened just after 5:30 a.m., and the southbound lane and off-ramp were reopened at about 8:55 a.m., Kroncke said.
