Final approval of SF shelters underway

SAN FRANCISCO

An ordinance introduced by Supervisor Tom Ammiano would require city-funded shelters to supply basic needs such as soap and toilet paper, clean towels, sheets and blankets, and nutritious meals, as well as 24-hour access for homeless clients to shelters.

Legislation setting minimum standards in city shelters has received the support of the city's Shelter Monitoring Committee as well as the Coalition on Homelessness.

The ordinance passed a first reading of the board by a 9-2 vote on March 18.
