Attorney says Bey is falsely accused

OAKLAND, CA

The attorney for Your Black Muslim Bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV today accused the man's half brother Joshua Bey of falsely accusing his client in a kidnapping and torture case because he felt betrayed.

Ted Johnson, the attorney for Yusuf Bey IV, 21, accused Joshua Bey, 19, of trying to get back at Yusuf Bey IV because his client sided with another bakery associate who had gotten into a fight with Joshua Bey.

But Joshua Bey strongly denied revenge motivated him to plead guilty in January to one count of kidnapping in return for his testimony against Yusuf Bey IV and three other bakery associates who were accused of kidnapping and torturing two women in Oakland last May 17.

Johnson said he noticed Joshua Bey sometimes dropped his head in his testimony, which begin in late January and resumed today, and asked him if that's because "you feel what you're doing is wrong."

But Joshua Bey said the only reason he drops his head at times is "I wish I wasn't in this position."

Joshua Bey maintained, "I didn't do nothing" criminal.

Yusuf Bey IV and three other bakery associates are in the third day of a preliminary hearing aimed at determining if there is enough evidence for them to be ordered to stand trial on kidnapping and torture charges.

Prosecutor Scott Patton hopes the hearing, which is being guarded by eight bailiffs, will end Friday.
