Pedestrian hit by truck breaks leg

HEALDSBURG, CA

Jesus Villagomes Torres, 73, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for surgery after the 7:30 a.m. accident, CHP Officer Barbara Upham said.

Torres was walking along Dry Creek Road and crossing the southbound U.S. Highway 101 onramp when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup driven by Chelsea Ella Goldschmidt, 16, of Healdsburg, Upham said.

Goldschmidt was turning right from eastbound Dry Creek Road to southbound U.S. Highway 101 when she hit Torres at the entrance to the onramp, Upham said. Goldschmidt said she did not see Torres because the sun was in her eyes, Upham said.

There is no crosswalk at the accident site and Goldschmidt was in compliance with conditions of her provisional license and had no passengers in the truck, Upham said. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the accident at this time, she said.

The accident closed the onramp for about 30 minutes and the Dry Creek onramp to the highway re-opened at about 8 a.m.
