Concord qualifies for flood insurance discount

CONCORD, CA

The city has received word that it was awarded entry into the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System, which requires that the city comply with more than the minimum flood insurance requirements.

Its entry will allow residents to get a 10 percent discount if they renew their flood insurance or purchase a new policy, according to city officials.

Certain parts of the city have been designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as Special Flood Hazard Areas, and there are currently more than 1,500 homes that are partially or entirely located in the hazard area, according to city officials.

Residents located in the flood-prone areas are encouraged to have the necessary supplies and materials, such as sandbags and plastic sheeting, on hand to protect property and belongings from potential flooding.

Free sandbags are available from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the City Corporation Yard at 1455 Gasoline Alley. Residents can call (925) 671-3448 for more information and to arrange for pickup.

More information about flood insurance can be found by contacting the city's engineering department at (925) 671-3425.
