Police and California Highway Patrol officers this morning broke up a group of hundreds of motorists who had gathered to watch street racing in South San Jose, San Jose police Officer Jermaine Thomas said.

Drivers passing by the area notified police around 1:35 a.m. that about 200 cars had gathered in the area of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Bailey Avenue, Thomas said.

Hundreds of people were waiting to watch the street race, which had not yet started, according to Thomas.

CHP officers assisted San Jose police in breaking up the crowd and issuing citations for emissions violations. Thomas said street racing in South San Jose is not uncommon.

"It happens every now and then down in that area," he said.
