More than a dozen employees of the California Coastal Conservancy spent the morning weeding the Union Point Park in Oakland that is along the estuary between Oakland and Alameda.

"This is just a way of using some of that time for improving some of the parks we've helped fund, and improving them so everyone can come out and enjoy them," said Sam Schuchat, executive officer for the conservancy. "We're not working, and we thought we'd make a little lemonade out of the lemons."

The Coastal Conservancy provided $2 million in grants that helped plan and build the 7-acre park in 2005.
