Doctors said a brand new portable lung is on the horizon that could provide more mobility, comfort and ease.

Ward Forsyth is waiting for a lung transplant. He's one of the first in the nation walking around with an artificial lung.

"I know in my heart that stable patients like ours treated in this way will come through transplantation with a much higher success rate," said Dr. Bartley Griffith from the University of Maryland.

All I need is a bit more exercise and keep going, but I won't have to start at the beginning," said patient Forsyth.

The new device mimics the functions of a human lung. It's a big change from what lung patients have endured for years -- heavy machines that keep them home and in bed.
