The first wave of Muni layoffs will begin later this month.

The Municipal Transportation Agency says transit system mechanics, parking control officers and fare collectors will be among the 53 employees given pink slips on January 22. Another 50 workers will be laid off later in the year.

The agency is facing a $129 million budget deficit. The layoffs will save the agency more than $12 million in salaries and benefits
