Police release sketches of kidnapping suspects

CONCORD

Concord police got a call from Walnut Creek police at about 11:30 a.m. last Thursday saying they had a teenage girl with them who said she had been kidnapped in Concord.

The girl told police she had been walking on David Avenue on her way to Oak Grove Middle School when two men in a black sport utility vehicle pulled up alongside her. One of the men got out and pulled her inside the SUV, police said.

The girl said she was driven around the area and eventually dropped off in downtown Walnut Creek, where she went into a business and called police. She was not injured, police said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident along with an attempted kidnapping that allegedly happened the next day, also near Oak Grove Middle School, Lt. Jim Lardieri said.

Although both victims were students at the school and knew of each other, they were not friends and so far investigators do not have any evidence that would indicate the two incidents are connected, Lardieri said.

In the Friday incident, a 13-year-old girl said she had been standing on Weaver Lane near the school shortly after 6 p.m. waiting to be picked up from an after-school program when an older-model white van approached her and stopped in the middle of the street, Lardieri said.

The driver, a Hispanic man in his 30s, called the girl over to the van and engaged her in conversation, the girl told police. He then grabbed her arm from inside the van, Lardieri said.

The girl said she pulled away from him and ran back toward the school. As she was running, a second man, described only as a Hispanic man about 25 years old, got out of the van and started to chase her but then stopped, police said.

When she got back to the school, she called for a ride.

There was a third man in the van as well, but the girl was unable to describe him, police said.

The girl told police that she had been unsure about reporting the incident when it first happened and only reported it to school officials Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to contact Concord police at (925) 671-3333, the police department's tip line at (925) 603-5836 or Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
