Show topic: Bay Area Leadership Foundation
BEYOND THE HEADLINES
January 10, 2010
Bay Area Leadership Foundation
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings

This week's episode of "Beyond the Headlines" includes special guest host Dan Ashley. This show looks at insurmountable challenges many of our young people face, particularly those who live in disadvantaged communities.

We feature a non-profit organization that helps at-risk kids from the Bay Area get into college. The Omega Boys Club – Street Soldiers of San Francisco – has reached a milestone. They are celebrating the graduation of their 150th student from college!

A 2009 report by the Center for American Progress, a research and educational institute, finds that several barriers face students, particularly urban minority students, who want to go to college:
  • Students are not prepared academically,
  • They have trouble navigating the college enrollment process
  • And financial aid is declining while the cost of college is rising

One program that's bridging the gap for disadvantaged students is the Bay Area Leadership Foundation.
