3 local celebrities honored at White House

Three Bay Area celebrities were honored at the White House for their contributions to the arts.

Three Bay Area celebrities were honored at the White House Thursday.

Actress Rita Moreno, who lives in Berkeley was one of only 10 performers ever to win an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony.

She was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama for her remarkable body of work. Along with San Francisco Symphony director Michael Tilson Thomas.

The presenter said Tilson Thomas was honored "For his dedication to elevating American orchestral playing as a renowned conductor?"

Tilson Thomas is in his 15th year with the San Francisco symphony.

The Medal of Arts is the nation's highest award for artistic achievement.

Among the other honorees were Carmel's Clint Eastwood, and singer Bob Dylan, but they were not there for the ceremony.
