Man arrested for hitting girls in crosswalk

SAN RAFAEL, CA

The girls, ages 15 and 16, were crossing Second Street in San Rafael at about 6:45 p.m. Monday when they were hit by a maroon van traveling south on B Street, Sgt. Michael Vergara said.

One of the girls suffered a minor leg wound, police said.

The driver fled east on Second Street but a witness was able to write down the van's license plate number, Vergara said.

Police broadcast a description of the vehicle and a Marin County sheriff's deputy driving north on U.S. Highway 101 near Lucas Valley Road spotted it, Vergara said.

After further investigation, police arrested Gbayere Germain Any, 48, of Novato, at 8:20 p.m. at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd. in Novato.

He was booked into jail on charges of felony hit-and-run and failing to yield to a pedestrian, an infraction, according to the Marin County jail log. His bail is $50,000.

Any is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Marin County Superior Court.
