Survey: Consumers lost $550M to Internet scams in 2009

The Internet Fraud Complaint Center says consumers lost $550 million in 2009. That is more than double the losses reported in 2008. People in California report more fraud cases than residents of any other state.

Almost 20 percent of the complaints involved merchandise ordered and paid for online that is never delivered; 14 percent involve identity theft.

Credit card fraud and auction fraud each accounted for more than 10 percent.
