Spirit Airlines gets rid of reclining seats

SAN FRANCISCO

Spirit's newest jets are equipped with seats that will not recline. Passengers have to be in an upright and locked position the whole flight. Even if you want to pay extra to recline, you won't have that option.

Spirit says stationary seats weigh less so it saves fuel, and the seats are cheaper to maintain.

So far, two Spirit jets are equipped with the upright seats and two more are on the way.

The airline caused a stir for its new $45 fee to put a carryon bag in the overhead compartment.
