Shooting, police chase lead to fatal crash

RICHMOND, CA

At about 3:40 a.m., police received a report of a shooting in the 500 block of Fifth Street and responded to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound, police Sgt. Bisa French said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was in stable condition this afternoon, French said.

While officers were responding to the shooting, a vehicle was spotted speeding away from the area.

An officer attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not stop, and traveled onto Richmond Parkway, where it crashed into the center median just south of Goodrick Avenue, according to French.

A male passenger in the rear of the vehicle died in the crash. The driver and another passenger, both males, were hospitalized and were in stable condition as of this afternoon, she said.

No arrests have been made as of this afternoon, but Richmond police are working with the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office and the California Highway Patrol in the investigation into the shooting, chase and crash, French said.

Northbound Richmond Parkway was still blocked between Goodrick Avenue and Parr Boulevard as of 1 p.m. due to the investigation into the crash, she said.
