Peninsula cities cancel fireworks to save money

REDWOOD CITY, CA

Redwood City on the Peninsula and Half Moon Bay on the coast have nixed their shows for a savings of about $40,000 each. They'll still hold other holiday events including parades.

Several cities over the past couple of years have decided to forgo fireworks displays because of rising costs or wildfire fears.

While corporate sponsors often fund the shows themselves, local governments end up footing the bill for police overtime, toilet rentals and other expenses.
