Teachers in Oakland vote to authorize strike

OAKLAND, Calif.

The teachers' union president says less than 15 percent of its 2,800 members participated in the vote.

In April, dozens of teachers held a one day strike after the Oakland school board voted to impose a contract on the teachers union, which did not include any changes to pay or benefits.

District officials say the cuts are necessary to balance their budget and repay an emergency state loan they took out in 2003.
