Mountain lion may have attacked deer in Hillsborough

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., officers responded to reports of a deer lying in the roadway in the 300 block of Robinwood Lane, a residential area of Hillsborough.

Officers on the scene found evidence suggesting that the death could have been the result of a mountain lion attack, emergency officials said.

Mountain lions are predominantly nocturnal and, according the to the California Department of Fish and Game, daylight activity could indicate that the cat was sick or injured.

Although mountain lion sightings are rare in the community, police recommend that residents take precautions when dealing with mountain lions or any other native wildlife living in Hillsborough.

Emergency officials are advising people not to leave small children or pets unattended in backyards, especially in wooded areas.

Police advise anyone who encounters a mountain lion to get to a safe location and call 911.
