Leland Yee reintroduces law requiring ski helmets

SAN FRANCISCO

Thursday, State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, re-introduced a measure requiring all minors wear helmets while skiing or snowboarding.

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a companion bill last year that ended up also killing Yee's helmet law.

Half of all skiing deaths are from a head injury. Recent studies show that helmets reduce the incidence of traumatic brain or head injury by nearly a third.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission has found that more than 7,000 head injuries per year on the slopes in the U.S. could be prevented or reduced in severity by the use of a helmet.
