Dashiell Hammet to have long-lost story published

SAN FRANCISCO

Next month, Strand Magazine will publish a long-lost story by the father of the hard-boiled detective novel more than 50 years after his death.

The story had no title, so publishers used the first line, calling it "So I Shot Him." The magazine's publisher found it while looking through Hammett's papers at the University of Texas.

Hammett wrote more than 80 short stories and five novels. The most famous of his works was "The Maltese Falcon."
