Groups working to save UC Berkeley sports programs

BERKELEY, Calif.

Donors were given until Monday to present a plan for reinstating baseball, gymnastics, rugby and women's lacrosse. The programs are set to be cut at the end of this school year. So far, the groups have collected $15 million in pledges, far short of the $25 million schools officials say is needed. They're now reviewing the fundraising efforts before making a final decision; $34,000 has come from Cal's rivals at Stanford.

Former congressman Pete McCloskey, who's a Stanford alum, says he's prepared to tap other Stanford grads if he needs to.
