Started in 2008 by former Mayor Gavin Newsom, Sunday Streets is a city-sponsored event in which roads are closed to traffic to make way for pedestrians, bicyclists and special activities.
This week's event will be held along the Embarcadero, between Fisherman's Wharf and Mission Bay, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., organizers said.
The event will feature free bicycle rentals, a mobile roller disco with free skate rentals, and activities for both children and adults.
Touted as the city's official block party, the monthly event is sponsored by the city, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the local nonprofit Livable City.
Changes to this year's events include a shift in hours and the replacement of printed schedules with large maps and banners to eliminate waste, organizers said.
The event will be held rain or shine.
Sunday Streets will continue through October on the second Sunday of every month.
