SF's tough new local hiring ordinance takes effect

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.

Starting today 20 percent of all hours worked on city construction projects must be performed by San Francisco residents. Over the next six years the requirement will rise in steps to 50 percent, making it the toughest local hiring ordinance in the nation.

The city's high unemployment rate was the catalyst for city leaders to approve the law. Neighboring communities have threatened to pass similar restrictions.
