A San Jose teacher has been chosen for an elite NASA mission. Marita Beard teaches science at Branham High School and soon she'll be able to tell her students what she learns from the SOFIA program. That's NASA's acronym for Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy.

The SOFIA aircraft is a modified Boeing 747 with a huge telescope for studying the formation of asteroids, planets, comets and black holes.

The first flights will be this month and next month.
