A Republican lawmaker is calling for an investigation into the million dollar, three-year contract for the man hired to run the state's welfare system.

As the head of the California Department of Social Services, William Lightbourne will collect more than $340,000 a year in pay and benefits, making him one of California's top-paid bureaucrats.

On Tuesday, Assm. Brian Jones, R-Santee, blasted the decision to hire him.

"The state shouldn't be financing that lifestyle especially when Gov. Brown is asking hardworking Californians to pay higher income tax, sales tax and car taxes," said Jones.

Jones has filed three Public Records Act requests to see the contract. The Brown administration has 10 days to respond.
