19-year-old dies in crash that closes I-880 off-ramp

OAKLAND, Calif.

Officers spotted a white Honda driving erratically on International Boulevard near 55th Avenue at around 1:20 a.m., CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.

The officers attempted to stop the car but the driver failed to yield. A brief pursuit followed and the Honda entered northbound Interstate Highway 880 near Hegenberger Road, Morgan said.

The driver, a 19-year-old Hispanic man from Oakland, exited the highway at the 29th Avenue off-ramp and crashed under the 29th Avenue overcrossing at East Ninth Street.

The driver was ejected from the car and suffered major injuries, Morgan said.

He was taken to Highland Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. There were no passengers in the car and no other injuries were reported.

Morgan said there was at least one open alcohol container found in the car.

The 29th Avenue off-ramp remains closed to traffic and it is expected to reopen around 7:30 a.m.
