Websites, apps give shoppers extra edge on deals

Shopping with high tech tools either on the Internet or in a store can save you a good deal of money. Some even pay you to shop.

"Even the biggest stores online are competing for customers all the time; they pay us a commission for every sale that goes through the website," Ebates' Rob Smahl said.

Ebates then split the commission with its customers.

"We show you the online coupons the top deals and when you make a purchase we pay you cash; no rebates, no forms to fill out, we pay cash," Smahl said.

Offering a similar deal is Extrabux.

"We tell them which coupons they should use for the product they are looking for and we tell them how much money they will get back from our company Extrabux," Extrabux's Jeff Nobbs said.

And if you are shopping at a store and want to make sure you are getting a deal, there's an app for that.

RedLaser allows you to use your smartphone to check prices. Take the item you are interested in and find the bar code. Line up the phone's camera and take a shot. Now watch as the app finds the same product at local stores and online and gives me what other stores are charging.

The app worked flawlessly during our tests.
