Report: "Blue flu" behind SJPD sick days spike

SAN JOSE

An analysis done by the Mercury News finds San Jose police are calling in sick in record numbers this year and warns that it could be undermining the safety of the city. Sick calls are up 40 percent from last year.

It comes as the city sees its highest homicide rate in 14 years and its lowest staffing level in two decades. Chief Moore says the increase has him re-thinking staffing and internally investigating officers who have a suspiciously high number of sick calls.
