For many, the long line they waited in will lead to a career, a chance, or a new future. They were hoping to get hired on the spot for one of Six Flags' seasonal jobs. The jobs range from guest relations, maintenance, retail, food services, and entertainment. Thousands were vying for them.
The theme park is hiring 1,400 seasonal workers, 200 more than last year. It is part of a recent nationwide trend where companies are adding jobs. Employers added 243,000 jobs to the American work force last month which brought the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years. Although, in California, the unemployment rate is still at 11.1 percent.
"Right now, it's anything I can get my hands on," Nicole Salet told ABC7. That was a sentiment shared by many of the people who filled interview room. And, there are some who never thought they would be there. "We have traditionally been more for teenagers 16 and over, first time jobs, but now we're seeing a lot of adults, even seniors," park spokesman Nancy Chan said. "If there's something, I will take it. There's no pride issues at all here," 52-year-old Scott Anderson told ABC7.
It was a day on which few offers would be denied, but many more applicants would be turned away.
