Burglar nearly runs over deputy while escaping

SAN MATEO, Calif.

At about 2 p.m., a deputy responded to the Ladera Oaks Fitness Club on Alpine Lane, where staff had detained someone who had allegedly broken into several lockers, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

As deputies were arriving, the suspect, described as a teenager or young man, ran out of the health club and toward his car, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Larry Schumaker said.

He got in his car and allegedly tried to drive over the deputy while making his escape, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy was able to get out of the way and was not injured.

The suspect is described as a white male with brown hair, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and around 140 pounds, according to the sheriff's office. He was wearing a white long-sleeve T-shirt and black pants.

His car is a four-door tan or salmon-colored Nissan Maxima or Toyota Camry, early 2000s model.

Authorities believe the suspect is familiar with the area and could be known to residents of Ladera or nearby communities.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Mateo County Sheriff's Detective Ben Hand at (650) 363-4192.
