San Jose cleans up homeless encampment

A day-long cleanup effort is wrapping up at a homeless encampment in San Jose at the Coyote Creek Trail south of Tully Road.

The encampment was cleaned up just six months ago but it quickly returned. There was so much trash and debris, city crews say they will have to return Thursday to get the job done.

One of the biggest concerns is the waste threatening local creeks.

"You have people who might decide to bathe in the creek, use the creek as a urinal," San Jose Environmental Services spokesperson Cheryl Wessling said. "There's a range of pollutants that come with these encampments, all of them affecting the water quality, the habitat, the vegetation along the creeks."

Homeless outreach groups are also on site, helping with housing and other social services.
