For years, police have kept been able to search and follow people by using information received from a person's electronic device. Democratic State Senator Mark Leno says that's not right, "And that cell phone or that tab, or whatever you carry around, pad, could give law enforcement where you go, what you do, who you know, every detail of your daily and private life. This is your privacy. This is not to be shared with law enforcement."
The measure would require police to obtain a warrant based on probable cause. The bill does allow tracking in an emergency situation or if someone's life is at risk.
