Prop 37 would require new food labels on products that are genetically engineered. Supporters say Californians have the right to know what's in their food. However opponents say the bill is misleading and that it's sets up frivolous lawsuits.
"All dairy is excluded even though cows are feed genetically engineered grains and cheese is made with a GE enzyme. All alcohol is exempt even though alcohol can be made with GE ingredients. There are also some curious provisions. Under Prop 37, pet food with meat would require a label, but also all meat under Prop 37 for human consumption is exempt," No on Prop 37 spokesperson Kathy Fairbanks said.
If approved, California will become the first state in the nation to pass such a law and other states would be expected to follow.
