OAKLAND --Sunday was the end of an era for a church that served the Oakland community for more than 100 years.
The Fruitvale Presbyterian Church now counts only 50 members as its congregation. During a meeting, the congregation voted 21-6 to close the church.Sunday morning's service marked an end, but also a beginning, "It's bittersweet," Rev. Abigail King said. "There have been a lot of tender things that have happened here. It's a moment for remembering and memories, but it is also a joyous occasion to recognize that god is still working and is good." A congregation called the New Revelation Community Church will begin renting the church next week. The Fruitvale Presbyterian Church originally served farming families who couldn't make it into the city of Oakland to worship.
