ABC7's Dan Ashley gets inside look at White House

WASHINGTON

Dan's visit with Obama covered a wide range of topics, including the approaching sequester. Obama is now reaching out to the Republicans about the automatic spending cuts that will kick in next week. He placed phone calls Thursday to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell. We don't have details on their conversations, but the president made it clear to Dan on Wednesday: the looming cuts will de-rail his plans for moving the economy forward.

Dan also talked to the president about Prop 8, about which the Obama said, "My personal view is that same-sex couples should have the same rights and be treated like everybody else and that's something that I feel very strongly about."

Dan also found time to touch on lighter subjects, including Obama's golf game with Tiger Woods.

"He plays a different game than I do. He's on another planet," Obama said.

But Dan's visit to the White House went beyond talking with the commander-in-chief. He was given an insider's look at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, from the historic rooms, to the first lady's vegetable garden, and the people it takes to keep the place running -- including some people from the Bay Area.
