Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan reads to fourth graders

OAKLAND, Calif.

"I laughed at the Lorax, you poor stupid guy, you never can tell what some people will buy," Jordan read.

The police chief sported a bright "Cat in the Hat" hat and read from "The Lorax" to fourth graders at Reach Academy.

This was all part of "Read Across America," an annual event to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and to highlight the importance of developing a love for reading at an early age.

For the event, adults were encouraged to visit schools and read to kids.
