Oakland considers banning dangerous objects at protests

OAKLAND, Calif.

The ban would prohibit demonstrators from carrying items like hammers, wrenches and shields at protests.

The ordinance comes in response to the violent rallies seen in Oakland last July after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

During those protests, a man was hit in the face with a hammer while trying to prevent restaurant windows from being smashed.
