Monday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency told the Land Use and Economic Development Committee that in the two months since the launch, almost 2,000 people bought annual memberships for $88 each and the system is averaging between 900 and 1,000 trips a day.
Right now there are 35 stations and 350 bikes between the Embarcadero and Hayes Valley, by early 2014 there will be 15 more stations and a total of 500 bikes in more neighborhoods.
The city has its sights on expanding to 3,000 bikes across the whole northeastern quadrant of the city.
The bikes are designed for short, one-way trips -- pick up at one station, drop off at another.
Corporate sponsors are one possibility for funding expansion, which could cost $20-$30 million. Public money is also an option. Supervisor Scott Wiener hopes to have it done within two years.
