Thirty-two students from Santee Elementary School in San Jose are being taken on a holiday shopping spree by local law enforcement officers this morning.

The "Shop With a Cop" event begins at 9 a.m. at the Target store at 533 Coleman Ave. in San Jose. The students will each be given a $125 gift card and be escorted around the store by a law enforcement officer as they shop for gifts for themselves and their families, organizers said.

Several of the children selected to participate have lost a parent to domestic violence, San Jose police said.

Participating agencies include the San Jose, Campbell, Redwood City and Milpitas police departments, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers' Association, and police from several local college campuses.

"The students can pick out their own gifts and buy some for their friends and families," peace officers' association President Lance Scimeca said in a statement. "It will be a joyful time for all, much different from our serious business of law enforcement."
