Chiropractor John Lee says if you're waking up aching, sore or not rested, something maybe wrong with the way you sleep.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- If you're waking up with back or neck pain, your sleep position may be to blame, especially if you share your bed. Experts say some simple adjustments could let you sleep pain free.

When it comes to sleeping, Jamie Apostol says she likes to takeover most of the bed. While her fiancee Chris Staiano sleeps on the edge, on his stomach. Problem is - both were waking up with aches and pains.

"Yes, definitely. He complained of neck pain and i would have lower back pain," said Apostol.

Their chiropractor John Lee says this is a common problem. "If you're waking up aching, sore, not rested, something's wrong," said Dr. Lee.

Doctors say there is an organized way for couples to get a good night's rest, and protect their backs.

"They have to figure out, are you a back sleeper, or a side sleeper? Then, figure out which side of the bed is more appropriate for this couple," said Lee.

Chris is a stomach sleeper, which Dr. Lee says is an absolute no-no.

"A lot of people like to sleep on their stomach, but actually, it's the worst position for the neck and head and lower back," explained Dr. Lee.

These days, Chris and Jamie sleep on their side and back. If you're alone, Lee says use a pillow between your knees align your hips and spine.

But couples can use each other for alignment.

When Jamie and Chris intertwine their legs in a face-to- face position, it supports their back.

Doctor Lee says couples who both sleep on the same side, can spoon, or sleep back to back, or in a position Lee calls the protector.

Jamie and chris says since changing their sleep positions they wind up much happier.
