NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) -- Highway 37 remains closed at 101 in Novato due to flooding. The flooding did recede at Atherton Avenue where a detour has been set up for drivers.

On Sunday afternoon, at least three to four feet of water closed the highway between Lakeville Road and southbound Hwy 101.

"We have the Sacramento Delta, Napa, Petaluma all those watersheds flow into the bay and swell the water to a higher elevation and it takes a while to flow out, basically to the Golden Gate Bridge," said Marin Co. Flood Control Dist. Dave Nicholson.

Caltrans tried pumping the water out, but it's spilling back in just as fast from swollen Novato Creek and adjacent marshland. The CHP will have extra officers out to help with the morning commute.
