Saturday night was a race against time as over 8,000 firefighters battle 21 wildfires tearing across California.

The flames claimed the life of one firefighter. "Unfortunately, sometimes these tragic occurrences that do occur," one firefighter said.

Two people, including a California Highway Patrol officer, have been injured in an inferno near Cajon Pass, sparked by a car crash.

The scene is all too familiar for residents in Southern California. It was here that 3,500 acres, along with homes and cars, were scorched by a fast-moving blaze just last month.

There is good news Sunday morning for firefighters battling the Willow Fire in Sierra National Forest. Officials believe the worst of this fire is likely behind them, crews containing 50 percent of the blaze that has ripped through more than 5,000 acres.

The largest fire burning now in California is the Rocky Fire in Lake County, which has now burnt 47,000 acres and is just five percent contained.

There is some encouraging news about the Wragg Fire burning in Napa and Solano counties near Lake Berryessa.

The fire there is now 95 percent contained. It's burned more than 8,000 acres since it started July 22.

Full containment is now expected by Monday.
