CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Two young brothers are home safe after they went missing Sunday night. In the search for the boys, Alameda County sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a man they said had a knife.

Deputies received a frantic phone call around 7 p.m. Sunday about the 11 and 12-year-old brothers who went missing. Authorities started to search for Daniel and Charles McCarthy in a rural area of Castro Valley off Old Dublin Road. That's when deputies say a transient man charged at them with a long knife. The deputies opened fire, hitting the man. He was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive.

After the story aired on ABC7 News, viewers called the Alameda County Sheriff's Department saying they had seen the McCarthy brothers walking in different parts of the East Bay, specifically near Fremont. Officers discovered the children just before midnight as they were walking to their father's house in Newark.

"I just want to thank channel 7 for getting the word out because I believe it was instrumental in finding the children when we did," said Alameda County Sheriff's Captain Colby Staysa.

Deputies initially were concerned that the transient man was connected to the boys' disappearance, but say he was not.
