Doctors performed the wrong surgical procedure, operated on the wrong body part or on the wrong patient 41 times over a ten month period that ended in May.
Foreign objects left in patients after surgery was another major problem that was revealed. The records indicate that happened 145 times in the same reporting period.
The figures were compiled by the California Department of Publiuc Health under a new state law that forces public disclosure.
Ten hospitals were named and the department fined each of them $25,000.
