Matt Wilson, 21, disappeared from Houston just before Christmas, but his car was found last month in Berkeley.
Wilson's family said he has always had an interest in Berkeley and they believe he may be hiding out there.
When police found Wilson's car, they found materials on how to assume a new identity as well as a book on how to live cheaply in San Francisco.
