On Tuesday the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties kicked off its holiday drive.
Second Harvest says requests for food are up more than 50 percent this year or about 25,000 people, compared to a year ago.
"We're seeing clients that are coming to us for the very first time. We had a woman that was a doner and she lost her job, called us and said, 'Where can I get food? I used to donate to you and now I need your services. So, it's creeping up into the middle class, which is really different," said Lynn Crocker, from Second Harvest Food Bank.
The goal for Second Harvest is to collect $8 million and nearly two million pounds of food.
