Thirty-two-year-old John Charles Walters was suspected of being the ringleader of a band of burglars that hit 20 upscale homes in Lafayette, Walnut Creek, and Orinda.
The chase started when Walters, on a motorcycle, refused to stop for a speeding violation.
He collided with another car while running a red light. No one else was hurt.
